Sustainability Fact Sheet

Sustainability Fact Sheet (Q&A)

  1. What is Tupperware′s Vision and Mission on Sustainability?

Tupperware is a company that is relentless about quality and acts as a good steward of the environment. What we do today can matter tomorrow. Our philosophy and beliefs drive our policies and practices to support our commitment to social investment, environmental responsibility, quality innovation, and the education and empowerment of women and girls in their roles as builders of strong families and communities.
  2. Why does Tupperware address sustainability instead of the environment?

Caretaking the environment is an important part of sustainability, but it is only one element of it. For Tupperware, sustainability means meeting the needs of the present while taking tangible action steps to help create a better future. Our initiatives around sustainability focus on our sales force, consumers, associates, communities, products, and the environment.
  3. How is Tupperware′s commitment to sustainability demonstrated at Tupperware plants?

It begins with the well-being of our associates. As a result of inspections, training, and continual improvements, plant injury rates have declined since 1997 and are a fraction of industry standards. Sustainability extends to Tupperware’s pollution prevention and resource conservation initiatives. Among them have been initiatives to use alternative, more earth-friendly chemicals and manufacturing techniques, installing wastewater systems even when not required, and using energy efficient lighting.
  4. Is Tupperware measuring manufacturing plant sustainability efforts?

Tupperware completed its first carbon footprint analysis in 2008. We continue to measure our progress and monitor the success of our “3Rs” (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) initiatives across the globe.
  5. Are materials recycled or reused at Tupperware manufacturing plants?

Initiatives to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle paper, cardboard, wood, energy, water, and plastics are in place at our plants across the globe. In 2008, solely in plastic raw materials globally, we reused approximately 3.6 million pounds or 1,619 tons of plastic material.
  6. What happens to Tupperware products if they are returned?

Our plants around the world work with local companies that grind the limited amount of customer returns we receive into other non-Tupperware products. This process ensures a complete life cycle for our products. For several years, Tupperware’s recycling partnership programs in main markets have given new life to returned products by converting them into reusable low-grade pipe, builder’s film, and plant pots.
  7. Is Tupperware researching the use of bio-plastics or other alternative materials?

Tupperware′s robust Research & Development continuously focuses on the best materials to deliver superior, sustainable solutions for our customers. At the same time, it is important for us to evaluate and understand the overall global impact of materials based on its source. We want to be certain that alternatives would be beneficial to our environment and be equal in all ways to materials currently used.
  8. What makes Tupperware products last a lifetime?

Tupperware products are purposely designed to last a lifetime; Tupperware is restless about quality. Our devotion shows through products that are durable and of the highest quality. Every step in the manufacturing process, beginning with the selection of raw materials, complies with government regulations and Tupperware′s specifications for consistency and safety. Each product must pass rigorous performance and durability testing under the most extreme usage conditions before it is approved for sale.
  9. How do Tupperware products help reduce carbon emissions?

Food that ends up in landfills is one main source of greenhouse gas emissions. Products like Tupperware′s FridgeSmart® containers, with built-in ventilation technology, provide solutions for keeping food fresher longer, so it can be used rather than thrown away. Tupperware’s storage containers, which keep food fresh for long periods of time, also help with fewer trips to the grocery store and less gas wasted.
  10. What are some ways Tupperware products help conserve energy usage?

Conserving energy and saving time is a priority for many consumers. That is why Tupperware has developed the highest quality and convenient microwave friendly products, allowing users to conserve 50% more energy than traditional ovens. Also environmentally-friendly is the complete line of mechanical food preparation products that make cooking fast and easy while reducing dependency on electricity.
  11. Are there recycling codes on tupperware products?

Recycling codes are being imprinted on all our new products and systematically on existing ones. With thousands of products, full implementation may take up to two years worldwide
  12. What is Tupperware′s position on Polycarbonate (pc) containers?

Based on in-depth studies from government regulatory agencies, Tupperware continues to believe that polycarbonate materials, including Bisphenol-A, are safe. As we have the highest concern for the safety of our consumers, we continue to closely monitor this scientific debate and conduct research concerning the best materials for use in Tupperware products. Polycarbonate is not used in Tupperware children’s products, baby bottles or children’s toys.
  13. What are some ways that Tupperware′s corporate headquarters demonstrates sustainability?

Disposable containers in the employee food service areas have been eliminated; instead, employees use Tupperware mugs, tumblers, and food containers. All cardboard boxes used for storage are replaced by rented durable crates. Every office has recycling bins for paper, magazines, and newspapers. In 2008, an all associate “Green” Committee was established to provide leadership, mentoring, and education for future sustainability initiatives.
